Visitor Attractions, Museums and Galleries

East London's history, spans almost 2000 years. The area is full of famous landmarks and legendary characters. There are great contrasts between majestic and small-scale buildings. Across the river, the centre of Greenwich has been designated a World Heritage Site, encompassing old naval buildings, the Royal Observatory and the Cutty Sark.

Each district in East London has its own distinct history and style. Modern buildings blend with 17th and 18th century warehouses, townhouses and churches, to create streets with unique character. [Link to self-guided walks?]

Many old buildings have been adapted for the modern age. London's oldest wash houses are now home to the Women's Library; the Museum in Docklands is located in an old rum and tobacco warehouse, and former clothing factories have been adapted to house new arts centres and trendy restaurants.

Other buildings offer performances and exhibitions throughout the year.

  • Christchurch Spitalfields is world-famous for its music festival, held in June and December of each year.
  • Whitechapel Art Gallery has exhibited contemporary art exhibitions for over 100 years.

There are many other museums and attractions in the area. For more details, click here
