The Women's Library Book Group

2009-01-29

This month's book group book is Red Azalea. Experiencing abject poverty, brutal physical hardship, first love, and loss, all during this extraordinary and terrifying period of China’s history (1966–1976), Min’s memoir portrays a resolute mind, body, and spirit that refuse to be crushed. Despite her being subject to the exploitation and abuse of the oppressive and evil regime of Mao Tse-tung and his wife, Jiang Ching, Min was responsible for the care of her three younger siblings and often for the care of her educated parents who were forced by the Communist Party into gruelling manual labour jobs to carry out the goals of the Cultural Revolution. Min’s coming-of-age as a bright, strong young woman occurred during these harsh grey years of the Cultural Revolution. Our reading group is a welcoming and informal place to discuss a wealth of work by women writers. Please feel free to attend occasionally or regularly. Read the book and come and share your thoughts! £5 including refreshments. 6.45pm. To book call 020 7320 2222 or email moreinfo@thewomenslibrary.ac.uk
