The Women's Library Book Group
2009-02-26
This month's book group title is Testament of Youth by Vera Brittain. Vera Brittain’s autobiography is seen as one of the most influential anti-war publications of the twentieth century. She recounts her story from leaving her peaceful sanctuary in Oxford to train as a nursing auxiliary followed by going on to nurse wounded soldiers at home and on the continent. Vera saw there was nothing ‘holy’ or ‘just’ about war whilst recognising a tragic and terrible absurdity: she was working hard to save lives, while her brother had been trying to destroy them. This book is revealing of the reluctant impotence of women to do anything about the political situation at the time, forming part of the foundation for the continuing work of the feminist movement. Our reading group is a welcoming and informal place to discuss a wealth of work by women writers. Please feel free to attend occasionally or regularly. Read the book and come and share your thoughts! £5 including refreshments. 6.45pm. To book call 020 7320 2222 or email moreinfo@thewomenslibrary.ac.uk
