World Class Cycling Comes to Canary Wharf

2010-05-25

In a first for London, the Halfords Tour Series featuring the best British cyclists heads to Canary Wharf on 25 May.

The event sees Olympic and World champions Ed Clancy MBE, Chris Newton and Rob Hayles among those battling it out on a 1 kilometre circuit around the streets of the famous business and shopping district, which is home to leading organisations and 93,000 workers.

“Canary Wharf will be the showpiece curtain-raiser for the 2010 Halfords Tour Series. As the first round I am confident it is going to be a spectacular one,” said Mick Bennett, technical director for the Halfords Tour Series.

“Canary Wharf provides the ideal setting to host the best cycling teams the UK has seen for many years,” he said.

The Halfords Tour Series is contested between the 10 best teams of British cycling doing laps around Canary Wharf for an hour, reaching speeds of 40 miles per hour and higher. The Canary Wharf event will be the first of 10 racing series around the UK to decide the winner of the coveted Halfords Tour Series Trophy.

“The Halfords Tour Series at Canary Wharf gives Londoners a unique opportunity to see these top professionals up close, in a buzzing amphitheatre of bars, restaurants, performing arts, shops and world-class architecture,” says Camille Waxer, Vice President of Retail at CWG.

Cycling is growing in popularity at Canary Wharf, where over 3,000 people cycle to work each day. Organisers hope that many thousands of Londoners will gather to watch the spectacle and enjoy the entertainment and hospitality facilities.

The event will see North and South Colonnade, Canada Square and Cabot Square closed for approximately three hours from 6pm on the evening of 25 May; however all public car parks will be kept open throughout and private carparks will be reallocated around the Estate. Buses will be temporarily diverted to Bank Street.

The course runs in a rectangle from Cabot Square in the West to Canada Square in the East, with the start and finish line at Canada Square.

The Halford’s Tour Series race takes place at 7pm on Tuesday, 25 May.
