2010-07-19
The Canary Wharf Jazz Festival has announced its 2010 line up. Festival-goers can enjoy some of the best jazz sounds completely free, including headlining premier Latin Jazz pianist and composer, Alex Wilson; the incomparable, one-woman, R&B powerhouse vocalist Ruby Turner and living music legend and inventor of funk Pee Wee Ellis.
Opening the festival on Friday 13 August is award-winning Robert Mitchell 3io followed by the versatile and virtuosic headline act Alex Wilson. A whole afternoon and evening of music is on the cards for Saturday 14 August with the Round House Jazz Ensemble, a collective of ten talented young musicians, starting the proceedings with a performance that includes their special ‘outerspace’ tribute to Sun Ra. Young British trumpeter Matthew Halsall, whose 2008 debut album Sending My Love received rave reviews, will bring the afternoon to a close. The infectious raw beats and bass of The Baker Brothers open up the evening segment, while Saturday’s headline performance is from Ruby Turner, one of the greatest voices the UK has ever produced.
Sunday 15 August gets off to a rousing start with music from Cuban drummer and percussionist Ernesto Simpson and his sextet, Latin Jazz Explosion. Energy levels will remain high with brass heavy funk from one of the funkiest bands around, The Haggis Horns. Next up, the phenomenal young singer/songwriter Natalie Williams will present her unique blend of R&B, vocal jazz and soul. Funk and jazz legend Pee Wee Ellis and his band bring the festival to a rousing finale.
