New Artwork for Canary Wharf, celebrating The Spirit of East London
2008-05-08

Unveiled this month in the West Wintergarden is a new artwork by local artist Maureen Anne Holley, purchased by Canary Wharf from her degree exhibition at the University of East London
Maureen has always been fascinated with London, its architecture, the urban landscape and the people who live and work there. This photographic lightbox montage installation entitled The Spirit of East London, captures the spirit and the atmosphere of docklands, the vibrancy of regeneration as well as her East End childhood memories. Her twilight shots, taken from high buildings give a unique view on London. The river is at the heart of the work, as well as her life in London.
The installation is an accumulation of many of her projects aimed at various different aspects of diversity within the community. Her work represents the real residents of the area, often overlooked by magazines and marketing brochures, to celebrate the true spirit of East London.
Having recently completed a BA(hons) Photography degree at the University of East London, Maureen is working on various projects which include working with schoolchildren from East London, producing installations using projection and lightboxes, and following the plight of homeless people in London using her documentary photography.
