Aldgate is changing rapidly. Lying immediately to the east of central London it is a transitional area between the city and the neighbourhoods of the east end. It is well connected to both the city and east London via the District and Hammersmith and City Underground lines and numerous bus routes. Crossrail will arrive in 2017 with stations at nearby Liverpool Street and Whitechapel giving even better transport connections. It is a short walk from Aldgate to the major tourist attractions of Brick Lane, Spitalfields and the Tower of London.
The eyes of the world will be on Aldgate in 2012 when the Olympic marathon will pass along Tower Hamlets' High Street 2012 to Stratford. A programme of improvements is now underway to upgrade the pavements, road, parks and historic buildings along the route.
Through the delivery of the Aldgate Masterplan the 1970s gyratory has been removed and partly replaced with a brand new park. Officially opened by the Mayor of London in March 2010, this will form the heart of a new commercial core comprising more than 80,000 square metres of pipeline office space within the Aldgate Masterplan area that has already received planning permission.
